it was just another day at the resort tourists called paradise. the workers called it atlantis. austin normally would have work except it was his day off. basically he worked all week since he lived at the hotel, and got one day off, which happened to be this day. he didn’t really mind working at the hotel; he got to live there, swim with fish and sharks, and go to the beach at night. the thing he hated were the guests. they were always so rude and asking obvious question. ”can i pet an eel?” little children asked him once or twice before. he would tried to put on a happy face since he had to be nice. it was like disney, where everyone was forced to smile and be kind. he would tell the children that he couldn’t allow that since they could be injured. what he really wanted to say was ”sure go ahead, but don’t blame me if you die.” yeah, he could be a bit rude but anyone who had to work with guests all the time would be.
since austin had the day off to do whatever he pleased, he decided to hit the beach. he never left the hotel property because there was no need and he didn’t have a car, so he did anything on their property. it was prime time to hit the waves and go surfing, and he could never pass up an opportunity. in his hotel room that he was given, austin slid on his swim trucks and headed out the door, almost forgetting his room key. in california, where he was from, he always had to wear a wetsuit, but the water was so warm in the bahamas there was no need to.
once on the beach austin plopped his towel on a spot on the sand and dug his board in next to it to keep it from falling. he looked down at himself, noticing the tattoo on his hip that read godspeed. he never liked the result of the tattoo, but decided it would cost too much to get it removed so he just kept it, trying to ignore it.
when he was all settled and ready to go he picked up his board and went to where the water hit short. he then slide his board into the water and the planked on top of it, paddling further out. laila was supposed to meet him, but he decided to find where while catching a wave or two.

the clear, sea foam green of the water shined in the heat of the sun as a familiar brunette floated on it while straddling a surfboard. one of her hands glided across the surface of the water as she stared into it as if caught in a deep thought. a series of thoughts was more like it that were revolving in the surfer's mind. her brows were furrowed while her deep brown eyes stayed glued to the water. it had been a stressful amount of time during the past weeks for laila with practicing for the upcoming pro surfer's tournament and being at war with herself mentally. ever since the fall tournaments she had been trying to search inside herself to figure out who exactly she really was. lately she wasn't so sure how to define herself besides the obvious of her being a natural surfer. as days had passed from the fall turning into summer she kept questioning herself, feeling as if surfing just wasn't all she was about. the water rippled underneath her hand, signaling the oncoming of a wave pulling laila out of her deep thoughts. she shook her head, running her hands through her dark locks and looking out to wards the wide, open ocean. the sea calmed her instantly the second she caught sight of it as she walked onto the beach that morning. the sweet, salty smell of it and the soothing sound of it's waves crashing against the white sand was like a melody to her as she threw her towel, flip flops, and tunic onto the sand before rushing into the clear blue of it. the bright rays of the overlooking sun had heated the water into a lukewarm feeling making it perfect to just lay in, not that laila minded either way if the water was warm or not. she had grown up in the ocean it seemed from the time she started surfing at nine becoming used to whatever it threw at her as she rode it's waves. with eyes intently looking at the horizon she caught the movement of the wave forming that had interrupted her thoughts earlier. "perfect." she whispered to herself with a smile, before lying on her board in proper position. her hands moved through the water in sync as she paddled to wards the oncoming wave. she turned her board expertly at the right point to link with it. as the wave turned upright starting to form out into it's massive image she closed her eyes just for a moment, taking it all in before jumping onto her board. with beautiful balanced gained from over the years she began to move on her board, gliding in the wave as if she too were a part of it. for a split second it felt as if she were flying before her eyes caught sight of the oh-so-familiar austin conroy, cutting her concentration and sending her crashing into the wave all at once. so much for her peaceful moment she thought as she surfaced from the water, floating in it with her arms grabbing onto her board while she glared a bit at austin for interrupting. "don't. say. anything. you caught me off guard." she said firmly at him, as she pulled herself back up onto her board, straddling it once again. all the while her deep eyes stayed glared at him.

out in the middle of the ocean, austin sat straddled on his board, takiing a moment to take the beauty of it in. from the spot where he currently sat, bouncing on top of little waves as they pushed toward the shore, he watched the innocent people on the beach. he spotted siblings building a “jacuzzi” together near the water so that the hole they were digging would fill up with enough salty ocean water to make a bathtub that they could sit in while digging for sand crabs at the same time. he chuckled at it, remember doing that by himself when he went to beach as a kid after a surfing competition. before a competition everything was so stressful, telling austin what he needed to do to score the most points and what not. after, it all mellowed out and he could do whatever he pleased, like playing on the beach. though, that was all before his accident; the one he dreaded of speaking of and hated when people brought up. when austin was young he had found a passion for surfing at a young age. he grew up in the small town of santa barbara, just another small beach town on the coast of california. the accident basically consisted of him wiping out in one of his major competitions and he had horrible injuries due to it. he was riding through the tunnel of the wave, right where he could see out of it, the most gorgeous view in the world. he had his hand caressed the wall of the wave, almost making it through. right when he thought he broke away from the wave it collapsed on him, taking him and his surfboard down and tossing him in the wave like it was game. due to that he hit a piece of coral while he was under and cut his foot, making it impossible for him to put any pressure on it for a few months. besides that he got a scare on his stomach, where it still is. he also got a minor concussion, but that wasn’t even the worse. the worst thing for austin was that he couldn’t finish the competition. he promised himself a long time before that, that he would finish every meet, no matter what. he was so embarrassed about what happened that he gave up surfing for a few years and didn’t even go near a board. he could never face his fears. some say he was the beathany hamilton of his age group, but no one would ever know because he gave up.
the water started to push back, away from shore, and austin knew a big wave was coming. he planked on the board and paddled further out, hoping to make it in time to catch the wave. with every stoke he began to get closer and closer until he was at the prime spot. he stopped and turned around, having him back to the wave. he laid down on the board and then starting to paddle when the time was right. soon enough he hopped up and put his arms out slightly to keep his balance. ”hang ten!” he joked as the wave carried him ashore. he ran off his surf board and then messed with his short hair that had sand in it. he began to strode back to where he had bobbed for a bit, waiting again for a wave. in a distance he saw the girl he was waited for, riding a wave and then getting tipped off her board. when she threatened him to not saw anything he couldn’t help but rise to the challenge. ”oh look, you’re early. and how did i catch you off guard, you were supposed to be on the beach meeting me there.” he said, bobbing on top of the surface of the wave, flowing with the water. ”also, just a tip. try to keep yourself from falling. judges don’t like wipeouts, trust me,” he winked, happy she made it.

when it came to being the best that laila herself could be during surfing she always tended to be her worst critic. she knew that she alone was her worst enemy out of all her competitors during tournaments. perfection was what she always droved for during her training sessions. to catch the right wave, to know when to ride it, and to predict just the right time to make her moves. coordinating it all in her mind along with the stress of people watching her on show, especially the judges always would get her anxiety up a notch. it wasn't that she was nervous or anything; she just expected too much from herself she realized knowing that sometimes it only led to disappoint when she would mess up a move or crash out of a wave...much like she did now. not being able to finish out a wave when she surfed, but to crash instead by merely getting distracted only made her want to knock herself on the head. concentration was key when it came to surfing and it only just made her angry whenever she messed up something as simple as keeping her eyes on her board. "now, don't be silly, austin..which i know is extremely hard for you. how could you expect me to wait on the beach when these waves were just calling for me?" she replied with a bit of a smug look on her face, a bit mad still about the incident that had occurred with him. other than the fact that he was the distraction that made her fly off her board. austin had always been someone laila had admired as a fellow surfer with his own style and passion to surf. looking in awe at the way he moved so breezily through the waves made her believe it was possible to be the best she could be. after the accident that had injured him however both physically and mentally a bit, she had started to look at him in a darker light. when he stood off the board, not willing to surf for a while she grew angry at him for giving up just like that when she knew he still had it in him to be as great as he was before. after much persistence on her end though she had persuaded him to give it another chance so every time whenever he would have off they would meet at the beach to start their 'surf lessons.' "please. just keep your eyes on your own board, aussie." she said, teasing him with a horrible nickname as she flicked water with her hand at him. "so what do you wanna work on today? and don't say something to make you better. i'm not a genie you know." giggling at her own joke, she smoothed her hands over the water again. a slight yawn came from her mouth from being out so early so she stiffled it a bit by putting her hand over her mouth. she wasn't about to let austin see how tired she was cause once he knew he would instantly jump into 'protective' mode telling her she should rest for a bit. laila was the one that had to push him to work hard and make sure he did it; he wasn't going to be the one to make sure she did anything. no way, no how. "the waves have been pretty rad today too, so get ready for me to kick your butt. and no stealing them! if you so as go for a wave i'm going for i'll push you into the ocean." it was a playful warning as her eyes shined full of mischief knowing it would be a long day of training ahead of them.

austin had met laila at a surfing competition years back, one that was just for fun as it was coed. they hadn’t gotten a long too well, more like a how a brother would act to his sister. they had sort of gotten pumped for the competition together, warmed up, and just sort of talked. he would try to scare her as she would do the same and it was just nice. that was before his accident though of course, as after that he couldn’t even face any surfers. everyone brought up how bethany hamilton was surfing with one arm so why couldn’t he had one bad wipeout? it was austin’s first and last wipeout, so now he only surfed for fun, just trying to get the basics back so he could find out why he was so passionate about it in the first place.
”maybe i was trying to make you be patient young grasshopper. besides, normally you’re late so i was going to catch some waves myself.” austin said the first part in a master-jedi sort of voice, much like yoda’s in starwars. he was a jokester, he always had been and always would be, people always thought it was because he was trying to get attention, but he didn’t really like getting attention. it was just because he found himself funny and liked to try to brighten up other’s days as well. if he really wanted attention and he enter a big surfing competition to see the priceless faces in the crowd as they dropped the hamburgers they were about to munch on. but no, he was just going to surfing on the small island of the bahamas so no one would recognize him and no questions would be asked.
aussie? no one eve calls me that. just for that you get this,” austin said as he straddled the board, getting water flicked at him. he put his arm under her board and attempted to push it over, using all his might since he was only using one arm so he was at an unfair advantage. he finally knocked the board over, using the fulcrum of his arm like he learned in science class many years ago. ”i think we should work on teaching better balance,” he joked, giving her a hand if she needed help up. he sat smugly as he thought about what he needed to work on. he had pretty good basics, like balance, but he needed to add tricks. anything but going through a tunnel of a wave. ’it’s up to you,” he shrugged, moving with the beat of the waves as he sat on his board, waiting for their ‘lesson’ to start. he always thought it was very sweet of her to offer lessons to help him get to his feet, even though he always thought it was because she would write it down as charity work to put on her resume or something if she planned to go to college. ”the only butt kicking you’re going to do is getting your ass pushed into the water when you crash,” austin chuckled. he gave her a playful smile so she knew he was only kidding as laila was an amazing surfer and he didn’t know why she crashed earlier. maybe it was because she got distracted by his handsomeness. he waited for their lesson to start as waves rolled past, lifting him higher and then setting him back on top of the surface of the wave. it was a relaxing feeling, just bouncing on top of the water; one he would never forget because that was where most of he thinking was done.

laila always had her wits cut out for her whenever she was around austin. from the beginning of their first meeting they had an instant connection that came along with bickering and constant play fights between them. it was all clean fun though; omitting some of the bruises she had given austin when the play fighting had gotten rough. they were older versions of a brother and sister relationship, always at war with each other, but still loving to wards one another all the same. there was no denying that laila cared for austin as much as he cared for her, which blossomed the plan of getting him back to surfing in the first place. these 'lessons' were to get him in touch with his passion once again and laila just hoped it would be in time for the winter tournaments coming up. "surprise, surprise. for once i'm early. aren't you proud, master?" she bent her head with her hands pressed together at him, mimicking the jedi voice he gave her. a giggle had to be suppressed as she tried to keep a straight face looking at him which was wiped away quickly as she flipped into the water. her eyes were instantly molded into slits as she surfaced, looking straight at him with what seemed like revenge. "why do you have the habit of always flipping me off my board?! you should know by now that it doesn't teach me a lesson!" hollering at him she slipped back up onto her bored, slicking back her long hair away from her face. "i'll get you back for that one when you least expect it. she sort of mumbled as her eyes gleamed. the tide seemed to be growing as noon started to set in, meaning just the right waves were beginning to form. her eyes settled on the horizon, waiting for just the right one to reveal itself to them. "balance i already have. i just didn't expect you to be here so early even if i do end up being late. you caught me off guard like i said." the explanation came out of her lips as her attention turned back to him. for the past couple of days they had worked on everything from balancing on the board right again to teaching austin the easiest way to ride once again. there were moments that grew hard for them, him especially as frustration would sometimes mix into the 'lessons.' it was hard work, extremely hard work, but laila knew that if they kept it up austin would be the surfer she looked at in awe once again. "let's start practicing some basic tricks. we haven't done any of those yet. it'll be a challenge for you." laying onto her board she turned it to wards the sea as she began to paddle a bit farther out where the waves were forming. "come on slow poke! don't thing i'm going to be easy on you just because you haven't been in the game for a while!" she yelled over her shoulder, laughing. her hands pushed her forward on the board getting closer to the waves until she stopped, leaning up a bit. "the first one is yours. show me what you still have austin conroy." she challenged him, saying his name as if he was a god.

”i am very proud, jedi,” austin beamed, as she bowed to him like he was a dojo master. he sat tall, like he was the king of the world, though he was really at the bottom of the food chain in the surfing world. he wondered if he would ever be as good as he was before, or possibly even better. he hoped so, but it really depended how much he wanted it and how much he would try for it. so far he was being sort of lazy since he had many doubts, but with enough time he would start to focus and see maybe he could make a comeback, shocking everyone. there were a few winter competitions coming up that he was going to try to squeeze into. that was, if laila thought he was ready. he may had been in the surfing world longer than her, but she stuck to it longer and had more passion than he currently did. he wondered if the torments on the island were different than the ones in california, but at least he didn’t know any of the surfers in the bahamas so possibly he wouldn’t be judged by them, well ‘them’ meaning everyone besides laila. the judges wouldn’t know a thing about them unless they had judged him before as a guest judge back in california so they wouldn’t deduct pointless things that they wouldn’t do for the others. he decided he should at least try to enter the competition, if he was ready in time.
austin pulled his hand away as he chuckled as she fell into the water, her board flipped over. she didn’t grip his hand to get help so he decided she didn’t need it. ”well ms. chell, i find it entertaining. as do you when you poke fun at me,” he said in a smart-alec way. he ran his hand through his hair, just trying to rub the sand out of it that was making his head itch. ”i’m sure you will, at the same moment pigs fly,” he joked, knowing laila was incapable of getting him back. he rubbed his board with his hand, checking to see if it was still waxed well. it seemed pretty good so he smiled, proud that he had finally done a good job at that. ”was it my good looks that got you distracted?” he smirked, flatting himself. he loved messing with her; it was just so easy, carefree, and fun. she was like the sister he never wanted but deep down was happy she was around. who else would keep him in line?
”i’ll rise to this…challenge,” he murmured, putting air quotes around challenge. basic tricks were not challenging, they were for beginners, which he was not. he was just practicing advanced skills, even if laila made him to kid’s stuff. he turned his board as he lied down on his flexed stomach. slowly with one stroke at a time he paddled out to where she was waiting. ”just so you know i was the bethany hamilton of my league,” he mentioned. he pushed him up so he could sit, facing the waves that were starting to form. the waves perfect for riding to the shore. ”i accept that challenge,” he smiled, leaning back down and paddling out further to where there was a prime spot to catch a wave. he turned the back of his board toward the wave as he looked behind, seeing how much time he had. the key element of surfing was timing, so if he messed that up he wouldn’t be riding anything. the water started to push back and he knew he had to start paddling, and fast. using the muscle in his arms he paddled, not really going anywhere. he tried harder, breaking away from the wave a bit which was just what he wanted. on the count of three he stood up in one swift motion, his feet spread shoulder length apart as he rode the wave. he whipped his board up, going to the top of the wave and the turned fast down and then went up again like he was making an ‘s.’ he looked over at laila, seeing her expression. at that moment he lost his footing and had no choice but to be eaten by the crashing wave. ”gah!” he exclaimed as he fell, popping his head up quickly to catch some air. he wiped his face with his hand, burning his eyes with the salt water residue on his hand. ”it burns,” he moaned, reaching for his surf board and pulling himself up, paddling against the current to where laila was sitting. ”you distracted me,” he mocked, coming up next to her and straddling the board. well that was awkward, he had gotten too cocky and carried away and now embarrassed himself, as usual.

surfing had always been a way of life for laila. just like growing up was a natural part of life, so was surfing for her. there was never a beautiful weather filled day that would pass by without laila being caught in the ocean, gliding on her surfboard. being in the current of the waves, riding them, and manuvering her board along them was like a reality escape. out there it felt as if noone could reach her and nothing could touch her. the feeling of invicibility would take over her mind; not leaving much of it open to stress over things happening on shore. the steady sway of the water rocking her surfboard underneath could lull her to sleep if she let it. but as of now it was time to keep her attention situated on one of her dearest friends. time to get into action and keep the dream world behind even just for a day. she kept a keen eye on austin, chuckling a bit under her breath as he seemed to mimick her. he was always doing something humorous at any and every moment. austin was never one to have a dull day being that he usually had a positive attitude due to him being a jokester. "just pay attention to the wave, buddy! hollering at him she crossed her arms looking as he went out to wards it. it was safe to say that laila was a bit protective over austin, even if he was a guy. ever since his accident it was like it had just come to her that she wanted him to be safe..at least when he was around her that is. as he started to make his position at the wave, turning into it, and forming an 's' shape through it's caving in form she had a flashback of him performing at a tournament. it was a burst of a deja vu of the two of them competing at a fall tournament in which they met each other. laila remembered being introduced to him by a fellow surfer and instantly sensing a competitiveness to wards him. she knew he was talented on the board, as talented as they came like herself. being a natural surfer made you at the top of the list on challenging other surfers. right away when it was his turn up her eyes seemed to have widened like they were orbs as she watched him move almost gracefully along the waves. laila wanted to see him do that once again; wanted to see the beautiful passion he had. however it seemed like it would be taking time before that as she was brought back to reality from his scream before crashing into the wave. "way to go austin! now, now did my incredible looks distract you this time?" she teased him as she batted her eyelashes his way. it always seemed to turn into fun and games between them, never stopping unless there was a serious matter at hand. "you should try that again without falling, don't you think?or should i let you sit back and watch me instead?" the brunette knew not to be too hard on austin with him trying to pick up his skills on the board again, but when a moment like this came along she knew to take advantage of it right away. it wasn't like he wouldn't do the same anyways and she knew it too. "so do you think if we keep this up you'll be ready for the winter tournaments? i heard there are going to be some big competitors this season." word on the coast traveled fast. and through it all came news of new surfers, rookies that were naturals ready to send pros like austin and herself under the waves with the fishes. "i honestly think we have our work cut out for us. i'm a bit stressed about it all... saying this she sort of averted her eyes, not wanting to show how nervous she was. deep down though she was scared shitless about how the tournament would turn out. her mind wasn't really as focused on surfing like it used to be. with so much happening and changing around her it seemed like surfing wasn't at the top of her priorities anymore.

”something along those lines,” he laughed, wiping off all the water droplets that were dangling from his chin. he hated being coated in water droplets; the salt slowly lingered into his skin the more he absorbed it as he sat there in the heat of the day. austin didn’t mind being in the water, it was being half in and half out that bothered her, but that was surfing. patience, sitting on your board with only your calves and feet dangling in the water…he used to love that but now it seemed like something had changed for him. surfing was no longer a passion for him like it once was, more like a thing for him to do when he was bored. he didn’t want to tell laila though, as she would probably freak out on him and tell him that he needed surfing…or something quotable. he knew he would always love surfing, it was just that austin didn’t know if he wanted to peruse it. he hadn’t told anyone about that, besides his mind, in fear that he would decided stick with it and he didn’t want to be called a hypocrite. he sighed to himself, returning back to reality when he heard his friend speak.
”i think i better try that again. just sit back and watch,” he smiled as he began to plank onto his stomach, pushing himself off further into the depths of the ocean before he stopped, sat up, and turned back, brushing against the brunette ever so lightly. ”i don’t know,” he muttered, shrugging. austin didn’t have much faith in his surfing, so he guessed he would loose pretty badly. ”i don’t think i’m ready.” he was about to leave again to search for the next wave that was forming but she spoke again. ”you’re stressed? you’re not even the one who has to make a major comeback!” austin shouted, aggregated. he was going to get a lot of crap and she wasn’t; the pressure was all on him. it was basically all or nothing. ”i have one chance to make a comeback and i don’t want to mess it up. i’m going to go catch the next wave,” he stated, beginning to paddle into the horizon. he huffed as he pushed past a few waves brushing up against him, but he kept going further where there were more dangerous and frightening waves for him to test drive.
once austin decided he had gone far enough he stopped and looked at how far he was from laila. they were a good distance apart, one that would be tiring to swim to and from if one was out of shape. sitting on his board, austin looked out and spotted a wave, just forming. ”perfect,” he said to himself, turning his back to it and leaning in, onto his washboard abs as he began to quickly paddle like he was doing some drill. he could feel it coming, like it was a gift. he picked up the speed of his paddling so he was going as fast as he could and finally the wave caught up to him. in a swift motion he went from being on his torso to being on his feet as he focused on his target; the beach. nothing was going to distract him. austin turned his board sharply as he went up the board, then back down like he had before he wiped out last time. he almost lost his balance so he dipped his fingers into the water, turning his body to keep from falling. once back up the water sprayed against him with a gentle sea mist, calming him. when he finished the wave he sat back down and was pretty proud of himself. he swam back to laila, wanting to hear her critique.
